Flores ut At Least Three Months Maybe For Season

Flores has been on the disabled list since May 15 with a right shoulder contusion. As recently as last week ago the Nationals were anticipating Flores to be ready within days. But while rehabbing with Class AA Harrisburg Flores aggravated his injury and was sent to Birmingham Ala. for a consultation with Dr. Zach Berman will have more on this soon.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System is eliminating 245 positions the Birmingham News reports. f those 164 staff jobs will be eliminated outright; another 81 workers are being shifted into jobs now held by contractors the article says. The cuts are part of a broad review the center’s CE launched last fall.

(AP) — The Birmingham City Council has voted to legalize regulate and tax electronic bingo but it will be a month before the first license is granted to nonprofit operators. Mayor Larry Langford said he would wait 30 days to sign it after the Jefferson County district attorney expressed concerns about whether the machines ultimately will be declared illegal in the state. The policy was approved on a 4-1 vote. District Attorney Brandon Falls asked the city for the delay to allow Alabama courts to resolve the issue of whether the machines are legal in Alabama. Mschine owners will have to pay the city $100 per month per machine until January 2011 when the fee will jump to $2000 per machine each year.

Metro Birmingham forecast: Warm but rain possible today

Forecasters predict some sun and a high near 90 degrees today but a few thunderstorms are possible later today. Rain is also possible tonight when temperatures will drop to the high 60s. Thursday is the day for rain and thunderstorms. The chance is 80 percent and the temperature could drop to around 80 degrees.

The 38-year-old mall had been wasting away for years. Although it was once a bona fide shopping destination Century Plaza long ago lost ground to the metro area’s newer venues for browsing and buying. In recent years the mall’s anchor stores had dwindled to Sears and perhaps its biggest attraction was an annual rummage sale sponsored by the Junior League. So it was sad but hardly surprising to hear that when the final sell-off of Sears merchandise ends June 14 Century Plaza will be no more.
