Birmingham’s daily newspaper used employee furloughs and buyouts earlier this year to trim costs. Beginning June 29 employees will have their pay cut between 5 and 8 percent based on salary levels. n the News’ Web site Publisher Victor Hanson III said readership is strong but advertising revenue has declined during the economic downturn.
