The local daily newspaper implemented “cost-cutting measures” which also included freezes on employees’ pension plan accruals. n the other hand the company plans to double its 401 (k) matching program for participating employees according to the release. Earlier cost-saving measures included voluntary buyouts last year. In early February the newspaper scrapped its women’s lifestyle magazine Lipstick.

Birmingham-Hoover area home sales decline but beat national average

Home prices in the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area fell 2. 8 percent in January from a year ago but the loss is only a fraction of the average decline in prices across the United States. Nationally resale housing prices fell 11. 6 percent in January compared to January 2008 according to First American CoreLogic a market research group. That represents 11 consecutive months of depreciation by more than 10 percent and early February data shows the trend will continue.
