The Serbian will not play in Birmingham because of an arm injury sustained at the French Open. Sharapova who has a shoulder problem said: “I’ve got to make some mature decisions that will help my career. French Open runner-up Dinara Safina has also pulled out with a lower-back injury in another blow for Birmingham which is battling to retain the event.

Excavation work is under way for the Railroad Park a21-acre project infused with public and private funds thathas been a decade in the making. An initial study estimated that $150 million to $200million in development would occur contiguous to the parkwhich also is expected to be an anchor for pedestriantraffic in the city center as well as walker-friendlyimprovements on surrounding streets. One such set of improvements already is on the drawingboard in the form of a redevelopment plan for 17th Streetconnecting the park to a new Children’s Hospital aswell as the new UAB Women’s and Infants’ Center. The plan which calls for the street to move from a sparseindustrial corridor to a heavily landscaped thoroughfareincludes various streetscape improvements designed byBirmingham’s Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio.

But when the state van pulled up on Red Lane Road inBirmingham in February Carr and Hardie got a surprise. Thestate did not send six prisoners. It sent 12 all male. And after those men began to live in a house on SecondAvenue South and in one close to W… The state of Alabama’s desire to find re-entry programsfor many of the 11000 inmates a year who leave prison adesire that is not always matched by significant oversight. The Department of Corrections does not license residentialre-entry programs such as Good News From Above and it takesthe stance that any violation of zoning laws is an issue forlocal governments not the state. Mounting complaints from Birmingham residents and leaderswho say that Alabama’s largest city unfairly bears thebrunt of re-entry and halfway houses. Where they ask isthe willingness of suburbs or other cities to take up theirshare of the work to help former prisoners readjust to dailylife outside? Better than bus ticket: The Alabama Department of Corrections began a re-entry program in recent months to help inmates make a smoother transition back into society.
