The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority iswoefully underfunded is facing increasing fuel andoperating costs and is having to ask funding partner citiesfor more money. That being the case is getting rid of busfares this summer at the behest of Birmingham Mayor LarryLangford the best use of the money? We think not. The four months of free rides will cost the bus system$769000. The money Langford says will be made up by thecity from the business license fee increase that took effectthis year. Last fall the city promised the transit system$9 million a year for upgrades from the business fees.
