Rainbows clinch a much-needed win

The Rainbows battled back to defeat Alabama Birmingham Tuesday night to snap a six-game slide. The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball team (6-9) faced off against Alabama Birmingham (6-8) Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Alabama Birmingham Blazers were looking for their first three-game win streak of the season after taking two from UH Hilo but the ‘Bows were hungry for a win after being swept by No. 10 Long Beach State last weekend. Freshman Josh Slaats started on the mound for Hawai‘i Slaats gave up an early run after he hit a batter and the Blazers hit a run-scoring infield single. In the top of the second the Blazers put runners on first and second but failed to capitalize. The Blazers managed to land a man on first base in the top of the sixth due to a Hawai‘i error but Landon Hernandez threw out the Alabama Birmingham base runner on a stolen base attempt.

Budget hotel is vital link in city’s regeneration

At Team Birmingham?s launch event at MIPIM developer Harry Kenth announced that his company Great Hampton Hotels had signed a letter of intent to build a £10 million 84 bedroom hotel. Great Hampton Hotels is a new division of the Great Hampton Group and Mr Kenth said it was hoped that the new hotel ? to be called Hampton by Hilton ? was the first of a number that would make the best use of inner city regeneration opportunities. The decision to commit to the Hilton Group was welcomed by Coun Mike Whitby leader of Birmingham City Council who said that such schemes were a vital part of the transformation the city was currently undergoing. ?While we are delighted that Ballymore are building a fantastic new building for Westin Five-Star Hotels at the adjacent Snow Hill development the city needs balance and a good supply of budget accommodation as well. Harry Kenth and his team are to be congratulated in their persistence over two years to bring this scheme to fruition? he said.

Lowell Barron D-Fyffe Sen. Bobby Denton D-Tuscumbia Senate President Pro Tem Hinton Mitchem D-Union Grove and Sen. Rodger Smitherman D-Birmingham – were excused. Birmingham attorney Doug Jones said the five House members he is representing have been excused this week but he expects them to be called later. Jones represents Reps. Betty Carol Graham D-Alexander City; Merika Coleman D-Birmingham; Jack Page D-Gadsden; Laura Hall D-Huntsville; and Ralph Howard D-Greensboro. All five are present or former employees of the two-year college system.
