Biocote has silver lining to MRSA cloud over NHS
ic Birmingham.co.uk – Feb 27, 2008
BioCote has used it in a range of manufactured products including plastics fabrics paints powder coatings and papers. Its products have been taken up in a number of hospitals across the UK. In a recent pilot study at a Birmingham NHS Trust using silver-impregnated furniture and equipment in its outpatients facility tests found the silver improved bacteria levels by 95. BioCote managing director Matthew Harte a former polymer chemist said: “The Romans discovered that silver purifies water but they didn’t know how it worked. Today Nasa uses it to maintain drinking water in space and now we are introducing it into UK hospitals. “Already we have products in use in hundreds of hospitals across the country including University College London Hospital the Royal rthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham and Royal Preston Hospital… Mr Payne said: “Silver-based products work in the background around the clock to provide an additional level of protection – possibly saving lives. “Many hospitals are already specifying products with silver so when you open a door or use a hand dryer it could well have reduced levels of bacteria and a lower risk of cross contamination. In 2006 Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham launched the first “MRSA free” clinical unit in Europe using BioCote technology. Every fixture and fitting in the £130000 unit was impregnated with a powder containing silver ions. At the time Heart of England NHS Trust chief executive Mark Goldman said the silver products could be an important part of the NHS’s anti-superbug strategy. “We have been impressed by BioCote’s willingness to create tailored solutions to suit our specific needs and aims. They have been working closely with staff at the hospital to gain an in-depth knowledge of the challenges we are facing in controlling infection” he said.
