Worthy casts net wide in search of new talent
Belfast Telegraph – Jan 26, 2008
"I think it’s good for the Irish League that he has been included and it sends out a message to the League that if you perform well on a consistent basis you will be rewarded. Although Gary Hamilton has been part of the set-up I have decided on a change of face and those players who are doing well will get an opportunity at international level. "Worthy was also thrilled to welcome Birmingham City ace Johnson back into the fold. "I’ve spoken to Damien and he is absolutely delighted to be involved again" he added. "I will play ball with him and his football club. Damien has had such a torrid time with injuries and it would be good for him or good for us to see him in a Northern Ireland shirt again. He’s a character in the team and a leader as well… " International football is no different to club football in the sense that there are only so many players you can select" said Worthington. " I like to keep the squad nice and neat and tidy but the carrot of playing for Northern Ireland still dangles in front of so many players. "Northern Ireland squad: Goalkeepers: Maik Taylor (Birmingham City) Alan Mannus (Linfield) Michael McGovern (Celtic). Defenders: Chris Baird (Fulham) Aaron Hughes (Fulham) Stephen Craigan (Motherwell) Gareth McAuley (Leicester City) George McCartney (West Ham United) Jonathan Evans (Manchester United) Sean Webb (Ross County). Midfielders: Steven Davis (Fulham) Damien Johnson (Birmingham City) Sammy Clingan (Nottingham Forest) Chris Brunt (West Bromwich Albion) Keith Gillespie (Sheffield United) Ivan Sproule (Bristol City) Stephen Robinson (Luton Town). Forwards: David Healy (Fulham) Kyle Lafferty (Burnley) Martin Paterson (Scunthorpe United) Peter Thompson (Linfield).
