Birmingham City v Reading
RTE.ie – Dec 14, 2007
The Northern Ireland international has shaken off long term hamstring problems and could replace Mehdi Nafti who has to serve a one-game ban for incurring five bookings. Blues boss Alex McLeish has to decide whether to give the captain’s armband to Johnson who was skipper last season or Liam Ridgewell who has occupied the role during the first four months of the campaign. Central defender Johan Djourou is still struggling to overcome a pelvic problem and has only a slim chance of being sufficiently fit. Reading welcome back defender Michael Duberry (ribs).

The opening in central midfield has come just at the right time for Johnson who has now recovered from a nagging hamstring and lower back problem. New manager Alex McLeish described Johnson as the kind of character Blues need. Whether he would recover the captaincy from defender Liam Ridgewell though is another thing. “Damien Johnson comes back into our thoughts” said McLeish.

McLeish vowed that his players would not be found wanting on his managerial debut at St Andrew’s. He hinted that the formation could change slightly to reflect such an approach. And he urged Blues’ supporters to buy into his plans to rekindle the hostile atmosphere of old on home territory. “You find about football that there are no guarantees but we certainly will be telling the players and working with them to get them into more than a thought process whereby we can make St Andrew’s very difficult for teams to come to to make them wary of playing there” he said.

The centre-half has not quite recovered from injury that ruled him out of the game at Newcastle United last Saturday said Alex McLeish. “Djourou is still a doubt with this pelvic soreness he has got” said the Blues boss. “He has been training solely with the physio this week. “McLeish said he would be talking to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger imminently to try and secure an extension of Djourou’s loan.

Birmingham favourites for Hibs fullback Murphy
Tribalfootball.com – Dec 14, 2007
5million transfer swoop next month to grant the Englishman his wish to play in the Premiership. The former Scotland boss plans to splash £1m up front plus add-ons and a £20000-a-week pay packet for the 23-year-old full-back. Murphy who earns a tenth of that at Easter Road is under contract until 2010. But his new agent Willie McKay insists Hibs can’t stop Murphy leaving and that they can forget about a megabucks transfer fee.
