Birmingham seeking McLeish talks
RTE.ie – Nov 26, 2007
And sources close to City are optimistic McLeish could take over at St Andrews within the next 48 hours and certainly before Sunday’s Barclays Premier League clash at Tottenham. City will have to pay around £1million in compensation to acquire the services of McLeish who saw Scotland fall at the final hurdle in their bid to reach the Euro 2008 finals by losing at home to Italy. But that would not be a major hurdle as they received £3million compensation from Wigan after agreeing to allow Bruce to leave with 19 months of his contract remaining. And it is understood McLeish would more than double his current basic annual salary of around £350000 if the move to Birmingham goes through.

Gallas proves he’s the right choice

html”–>“The performance up until the last ten minutes was outstanding” Mar-cus Bentthe Wigan striker said. “We need to be bold improve and it will be easierwith a new manager. ”That manager is Steve Bruce whose financial wranglings with Birmingham Citymeant that his involvement was limited to a few stirring words ofencouragement. His delayed appointment meant that Frank Barlow reluctantlytook charge of Wigan for one last match. Barlow said that he was “very veryglad” he could hand over to Bruce. “I’m not keen on the top job” he said. It remains to be seen if Bruce whom Barlow worked with at Birmingham underTrevor Francis will keep him on his staff… Barlow said that he was “very veryglad” he could hand over to Bruce. “I’m not keen on the top job” he said. It remains to be seen if Bruce whom Barlow worked with at Birmingham underTrevor Francis will keep him on his staff. If the result was expected more surprising was the nervousness of the homefans. Arsenal have won 14 of their 33 points with goals scored in the lastten minutes so you might think the supporters would have more faith. “Theyplay such an enthralling and engaging game” Barlow said. “You sit there andjust admire it.

I’ve fled the country to stop social workers taking my baby

“It’s a lot better now that I’m away. Lots of people suggested Ishould leave but I always thought it was too extreme. Then when Iwent to Birmingham things weren’t going to happen quicklyenough. Northumberland’s plan stood until Birmingham made their own and Ididn’t have vast amounts of time. Now it’s such a relief not to be constantly looking over myshoulder. It has been so fraught with other people’s interventions. For the first time this will be just us: me and Molly.

Lord Bridge of Harwich

During the summer of 1975 he sat at the trial of the Birmingham Six. Concerned with pub-bombings attributed to the IRA the trial took place in the medieval Great Hall of Lancaster Castle and was Bridge’s last case before his promotion to the Court of Appeal. Certain aspects of the case were less than satisfactory and moreover as it later emerged unsound. There were numerous interruptions in the course of the trial twice so as to allow Bridge to see a dentist once because he had acute gastritis and on several days because his doctor had ordered him to take an hour’s nap at lunch time. Then as the trial neared its conclusion Bridge had to abandon his summing-up half-way through — because a prescription throat spray had failed to restore his fading voice… Subsequently after the jury had returned its guilty verdict Bridge declared that there had been “the clearest and most overwhelming evidence I have ever heard in a case of murder”. Critics said that Bridge had already made plain to the jury his view of the Six’s guilt and that he had argued like an advocate for that view during his summing-up. The Birmingham Six spent 16 years in prison before their convictions were quashed in 1991 on the ground of new evidence particularly in relation to the voluntariness of confessions they had made to the police. The appeal judges made it clear though that no criticism attached to the way in which Bridge had handled the original trial. For Lord Justice Lloyd it was “not surprising” that Bridge had ruled that the confessions were made voluntarily in view of the lack of bruising on any of the men when they appeared before the magistrates following their arrest. In an interview in 1992 Bridge said he felt “unhappy” about what had happened but not “guilty”. “It is so easy to be wise after the event” he said and the important question was: “How do we prevent it happening in the future?” For some years his name appeared in IRA hit lists and his house in Islington had to be constantly watched by the police.

The young ones seize the baton

Geoffrey Norris reports and profiles three of the most exciting new leaders It is not so long ago that when an old distinguished conductor came to the end of his tenure an orchestra would look to replace him with another old distinguished conductor. There were exceptions such as the 25-year-old Simon Rattle taking over in Birmingham in 1980 but in general the saying among cynics was that old conductors never die they only move around. That is all changing. First the LP and English National pera appointed dynamic young conductors in Vladimir Jurowski and Edward Gardner. And now the rest of the country is getting in on the act with the appointment of a trio of brilliant conductors all around the age of 30 who it is hoped will light up the orchestral scene. Today the Bournemouth Symphony rchestra announced that Kirill Karabits is to succeed Marin Alsop next year as principal conductor ending months of eager speculation.
