Itihaas Birmingham

Price £35-£45 a head for a large meal with beer or wine. Crossroads has come gone come again and gone again since then and for the past decade a resurgent centre that always strikes me as a giant amusement park for the nation’s cranes has seen all the redevelopment accompanied by a slew of fancy restaurants several with Michelin stars. Yet for all that and old prejudices dying hard the palatial splendour of Itihaas came as quite a surprise to me. The palace being hinted at here is I’d guess that of a Moghul princeling with dreams of hosting a viceroy in the late 19th century. Downstairs is a salon privée known as “tiffin room with butler” while the upstairs “Colonial Room” is as grand a dining area as you are likely to encounter bedecked by marble and slate and antique relics packed with finely wrought wooden Rajasthani furniture and ably patrolled by a large staff smartly clad in Nehru jackets and saris.

John Birmingham good morning and welcome to Saturday Extra. John Birmingham: How’re you doing Joe?Joe Gelonesi: Very well thank you. Let’s just firstly very briefly recap on what the case was about. What did Kerry Stokes want and why was he alleging a conspiracy?John Birmingham: He basically wanted vengeance mate. If you want to boil it down free of the legal terms Stokes was convinced that the other moguls Packer and Murdoch conspired connived with minor players in Telstra and Foxtel to basically dud him out of the rights to broadcast Rugby League on his cable show and he was utterly utterly convinced that they had got together in a room and said ‘Let’s stick the shit into old Stokesy’ and that’s why he spent so much money and tied up so much of his time the last couple of years trying to exact his vengeance.

Trucker faces new murder charge
Henderson Gleaner – Henderson Gleaner – Jul 28, 2007
Detective Mike Allison a spokesman for the Birmingham Police Department said investigators linked Mendenhall to the Carter killing by video from a surveillance camera located at an auto parts store near where the victim’s body was found. Police say the tape shows the bright yellow semi assigned to Mendenhall leaving the spot where Carter’s body was found. After reviewing videotaped statements the suspect made after his arrest in Nashville authorities said they were able to tie Mendenhall to the Carter slaying. At one time Alabama authorities had investigated Mendenhall in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Lewis a Birmingham Children’s Hospital cook who was last seen on May 18 2005. Her vehicle was recovered later at a Pilot Travel Center truck stop near Birmingham… “Right now when you look at his other alleged crimes and compare them to the open homicides we have here none seem to fit those circumstances” said Sgt. Cory Hardiman of the Birmingham Police Department. A judge in Birmingham set Mendenhall’s bond at $1 million. However he remains in the Davidson County jail in Nashville awaiting trial in killing of Sara Hulbert 25 who was found fatally shot at an interstate truck stop near Lebanon Tenn. Following his arrest Mendenhall allegedly gave police statements implicating himself in as many as six slayings in Indiana Alabama Georgia and Tennessee. Investigators in those states are coordinating their efforts with Illinois State Police who last week executed a series of search warrants at Mendenhall’s rural Albion home two storage buildings and his car.

The transfers of Tottenham players Mido Ahmed and Hossam Ghaly to Birmingham look to have fallen through. “You could say that both deals have been stuttering a bit” Birmingham manager Steve Bruce said on Thursday. “But the Mido one is a million miles away from happening.
